Awards Won at the 2022 Korean AI Competition

Five teams from Sogang University won awards at the 2022 Korean Artificial Intelligence Competition, held at El Tower in Seocho-gu on Friday 7 October: the Grand Award (first place) in the in-vehicle speech recognition category for corporate problem-solving (Hyundai Motor), the Grand Award (first place) and an Encouragement Award (third place) in the meeting speech recognition category (Naver), and a Data Quality Review Award (special prize). The 2022 Korean Artificial Intelligence Competition was held to encourage the advancement of Korean-language AI technology and the creation of new services on the basis of AI training data newly opened on AI Hub (aihub.or.kr), and to help identify AI talent. The competition was divided into Field 1 (Korean speech recognition performance evaluation) and Field 2 (corporate problem-solving), with Field 2 run as a contest to solve problems commonly faced by AI service companies in the areas of in-vehicle speech recognition (Hyundai Motor) and meeting speech recognition (Naver). Across both fields, a total of 226 teams made up of undergraduate and graduate students and start-ups took part, at an average competition ratio of more than 10 to 1. In this competition, run as a real-time online leaderboard with teams of up to four, a total of 24 teams and 56 individuals received awards. Winners in Field 2 receive additional points in the document screening stage for relevant roles when applying to the competition's sponsors, Hyundai Motor and Naver CLOVA. Team 'pony', composed of doctoral student Park Ho-sung and master's students Cho Eun-soo and Jung Yoon-seo of the University's Graduate Department of Computer Science & Engineering (supervisor: Professor Kim Ji-hwan), recorded the highest score in the in-vehicle speech recognition (Hyundai Motor) category and received the Hyundai Motor Group President's Award together with 10 million won in prize money. http://aihub.or.kr/

Team 'SGCSE', composed of doctoral student Oh Jun-seok and master's student Kim Ha-young of the University's Graduate Department of Computer Science & Engineering (supervisor: Professor Kim Ji-hwan), recorded the highest score in the meeting speech recognition (Naver) category and received the Naver CEO's Award together with 10 million won in prize money. In this category, Sogang University's 'Park Jung-gyun' and 'SGWannabe' teams also won Encouragement Awards, receiving the President's Award of the National Information Society Agency together with 3 million won in prize money.

Team 'Sogang Friends', composed of Sogang students Nam Ju-hyung (Computer Science & Engineering '17) and Kim Min-seo (Communication '18) (supervisor: Professor Kim Ji-hwan), won the special Data Quality Review Award, receiving the President's Award of the National Information Society Agency (NIA) together with 1 million won in prize money.

Park Ho-sung of Team 'pony', which won the Grand Award in the in-vehicle speech recognition category, said: "I decided to enter the competition to test in practice a topic I had been researching, and I am grateful to have achieved a good result," adding: "It was an opportunity to prove objectively the ideas we had developed in the laboratory, and I want to keep contributing to advancing speech recognition performance in Korea."
