The paper 'An Analytical Model-based Capacity Planning Approach for Building CSD-based Storage Systems', written by Byun Hong-su of the Data-Centric Computing and Systems Laboratory (first author, combined master's–doctoral, supervisor Park Sung-yong), Safdar Jamil (combined master's–doctoral, supervisor Kim Young-jae), Professor Park Sung-yong and Professor Kim Young-jae (corresponding author), has been accepted for publication in ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems (ACM TECS).
The paper proposes CSDPlan, a software tool useful for building cost-effective compute-capable storage clusters (CSDStore) using computational storage drives (CSD) such as Samsung Electronics' SmartSSD. CSDPlan is a solver based on a mathematical analytical model and is highly useful software for storage architects and administrators. Its usefulness was demonstrated through extensive evaluation using two real CSDs, including SmartSSD.
Byun Hong-su, the paper's first author, said: "I am delighted that research that began two years ago as a small idea has ended in a good paper; there were times when the results were poor, but I think we were able to bear good fruit by not giving up and continuing to work. I am grateful to my supervisors, and I hope that many students doing research will keep thinking, keep improving and achieve good results without giving up."
