The paper 'Ensuring Compaction and Zone Cleaning Efficiency through Same-Zone Compaction in ZNS Key-Value Store', written by Byeon Seong-jin of the Data-Centric Computing and Systems Laboratory (first author, master's, supervisor Kim Young-jae) and Noh Yo-seph (master's, supervisor Kim Young-jae) with Professor Kim Young-jae (corresponding author), has been accepted for publication at The 38th International Conference on Massive Storage Systems and Technology (MSST '24).

The paper introduces a same-zone compaction technique for LSM-tree databases based on ZNS SSDs. Same-zone compaction means that all data is placed in the same zone during the database's compaction process. To induce same-zone compaction as often as possible, the research applies a zone-aware compaction technique and a compaction-aware zone allocation technique. Using the two techniques together reduced the cost of garbage collection — a chronic problem of solid state disk drives — by 80%.

Byeon Seong-jin, the paper's first author, said: "I had failed several times on this research because of technical problems ever since I was an undergraduate researcher, so I am delighted to have solved the problem and written the paper at the third attempt. I am grateful to Professor Kim Young-jae for his guidance, and I hope graduate students will stay steady to the end, develop their own research and achieve good results."

MSST (International Conference on Massive Storage Systems and Technology) is an internationally recognized conference in operating systems, memory and storage. It is listed among the outstanding conferences of the Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers and covers big data storage and management topics such as next-generation storage technology, distributed storage and data deduplication.
