The paper 'Coordinating Compaction between LSM-tree based Key-Value Stores for Edge Federation', written by Kim Ji-seop of the Data-Centric Computing and Systems Laboratory (first author, master's), Yoo Hong-hyun (master's), Lee Seung-jae (undergraduate intern), Byun Hong-su (combined master's–doctoral, joint corresponding author) and Professor Park Sung-yong (corresponding author), has been accepted for publication at the IEEE International Conference on Cloud Computing (IEEE CLOUD). IEEE CLOUD is listed at an adjusted IF of 1 among the outstanding international conferences in computer science under the BK21 Plus programme, and IEEE CLOUD 2024 was fiercely competitive, with an acceptance rate of 19.4%. The research was led by Byun Hong-su under the supervision of Professor Park Sung-yong.

The paper proposes EdgePilot, which efficiently schedules compaction offloading for LSM-tree based key-value stores on edge clusters made up of heterogeneous servers. On the basis of EdgeCode, a mathematical model that predicts compaction time, EdgePilot offloads compaction to the edge server that can perform it quickly and efficiently. EdgePilot raised the average throughput of the whole cluster by 17% and reduced write stalls in LSM-tree based key-value stores by an average of 71%.

Kim Ji-seop, the paper's first author, said: "I am delighted that research I have worked hard on with my colleagues over the past year, starting from a simple idea, has ended in a good paper. I am grateful to my laboratory colleagues who supported me through the difficult times and to Professor Park Sung-yong for guiding the work to completion as a good paper."

IEEE CLOUD (IEEE International Conference on Cloud Computing) is an internationally recognized conference in cloud computing, covering the latest cloud computing technologies including cloud infrastructure, platform services, cloud security and cloud-based applications.

IEEE CLOUD 2024 will be held in Shenzhen, China, from 7 to 13 July.
