The paper 'ML-based Dynamic Operator-Level Query Mapping for Stream Processing Systems in Heterogeneous Computing Environments', written by Oh Se-jung of the Data-Centric Computing and Systems Laboratory (first author, master's), Professor Moon Eui-hyun (Machine Learning Systems Laboratory) and Professor Park Sung-yong (corresponding author, Data-Centric Computing and Systems Laboratory), has been accepted for publication at the IEEE International Conference on Cluster Computing (IEEE CLUSTER).
The paper proposes DYNO, a system that finds and executes the optimal device mapping plan when processing queries over stream data on servers made up of heterogeneous resources (e.g. CPU, GPU). DYNO uses a tree-based ML model to predict processing time on each resource, generates the optimal plan from those predictions, and continuously trains the model on actual execution results. DYNO improved performance by about 20% over the existing approach and succeeded in stabilizing the previously unstable processing performance of that approach.

Oh Se-jung, the paper's first author, said: "First of all I thank God the Father. I am also grateful to my laboratory colleagues, who were always a source of strength in bringing this research — begun when I was an undergraduate researcher — to completion as a good paper, and to Professor Park Sung-yong and Professor Moon Eui-hyun, who guided and led the work over a long period."
IEEE CLUSTER is an internationally distinguished conference covering parallel computer (cluster) systems and the various parallel computing applications that use them. It is listed as an outstanding conference in the BK21 list of outstanding international conferences in computer science and in the Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers' 2020 list of outstanding conferences in the software field, and will be held in Kobe, Japan, from 24 to 27 September this year.
