Professor Kim Young-jae, Department of Computer Science & Engineering,

Wins the Top Excellence Award at the '8th SK hynix Industry–Academia Research Project Outstanding Invention Awards'

On 9 November, Professor Kim Young-jae of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering was selected as a Top Excellence Award recipient at the 8th Industry–Academia Research Project Outstanding Invention Awards organized by SK hynix.

Since 2013 SK hynix has held an annual awards ceremony to boost researchers' morale and encourage development, selecting outstanding patents from among those filed by partner universities in the course of research projects. Owing to COVID-19, this year's ceremony was conducted with SK hynix staff visiting recipients in person to present the plaques.

Professor Kim Young-jae received the Top Excellence Award for his patent on a 'key-value based data storage device'.

Existing key-value stores suffer from write speeds substantially below the actual speed of the solid-state drive (SSD) because of software overhead, and because they run on the host server they consume expensive server CPU and memory resources.

The 'key-value based data storage device' developed by Professor Kim runs key-value store software using the CPU inside the SSD device. It can identify and access particular database rows quickly, speeding up the SSD's data processing while minimizing consumption of host server CPU resources.

Professor Kim said: "I am very pleased to have been selected as a Top Excellence recipient in SK hynix's industry–academia research, and I take great pride in the fact that the results of our research project through industry–academia cooperation were selected as an outstanding patent." On his future research plans, he added: "Because I believe developing large-capacity, high-performance storage devices that can store and process vast amounts of big data at speed is very important, I will continue to conduct research that helps advance core future technologies through industry–academia cooperation with the world-leading companies in Korea's semiconductor technology."
