The Undergraduate Paper and Capstone Design Competition of the 2020 Autumn Conference, organized by the Korean Institute of Broadcast and Media Engineers, was held online over two days on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 November. The capstone design project 'Development of a Korean Audio Captioning System', developed by Sogang University Department of Computer Science & Engineering undergraduates Kang Tae-ho, Kim Ju-hee and Lee Jun-ha together with Professor Koo Myoung-wan of the same department, received the Grand Prize (first place). The project was carried out in Capstone Design II, a course in which students learn creative design techniques suited to industry demand, and progressed through weekly meetings between the professor and the students.
A Korean audio captioning system is an artificial intelligence technology that does not recognize speech but interprets audio and converts it automatically into captions. Audio captioning technology can automatically render complex audio into text — for example, "birds are chirping while an aeroplane flies overhead".
