Kim Woong-gon, a master's student in the Computer Vision and Image Processing Laboratory of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering (supervisor: Professor Park Woon-sang), received the Grand Prize at the 2022 Tourism Data AI Competition hosted by the Korea Tourism Organization on 22 November.
Held online on the data competition platform DACON (dacon.io), the competition aimed to improve the production and management of Korean-language point of interest (POI) data widely used in the tourism industry.
The competition, to develop an algorithm that automatically classifies the types of some 23,000 tourist sites held by the Korea Tourism Organization, ran for six weeks from 19 September to 31 October with a total of 952 teams (1,117 people) taking part.
Kim Woong-gon's team won by developing, using Transformer and Vision Transformer, both a model trained on text alone and a multimodal network trained on text and images together.
