Graduate of Professor Yang Ji-hoon's Laboratory Appointed as a Professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at the Korea Naval Academy

Dr Seo Kang-hyun

Dr Seo Kang-hyun (pictured), a BK post-doctoral researcher at Sogang University, was appointed as a professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at the Korea Naval Academy with effect from July 2025.

Dr Seo Kang-hyun received a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Engineering from Sogang University in 2018, majoring in Economics and Convergence Software, and received his doctorate from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering (combined master's–doctoral course; supervisor Yang Ji-hoon) in 2025.

His main research field is analysing and forecasting time series data with inherent uncertainty using a range of deep learning models. During his studies he showed outstanding research results, publishing three papers at BK21 outstanding international conferences, one at an outstanding international conference of the Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers, and two SCI(E) papers. Beyond these results he was also active externally, with a record of seminars and awards at conferences in Korea and abroad.

Dr Seo Kang-hyun said: "First of all I am grateful to my supervisor, Professor Yang Ji-hoon, for his unstinting support during my studies; none of this would have been possible without my alma mater, Sogang University, which offered a variety of major systems that let me study a new field as an undergraduate." Of his aspirations he said: "In line with the Korea Naval Academy's goal of nurturing naval officers who can make rational choices even in environments with inherent uncertainty, I hope my research will contribute in some small way not only to the development of the Korea Naval Academy but also to the advancement of our navy's defence technology."
