Paper Accepted at the ACM ASIA Conference on Computer and Communications Security

(First author: Ahn Jin-woo; corresponding author: Professor Kim Young-jae)

A paper titled 'DISKSHIELD: A Data Tamper-Resistant Storage for Intel SGX', written by Department of Computer Science & Engineering students Ahn Jin-woo, Ko Young-woo, Min Dong-hyun and Park Ji-yoon under the supervision of Professor Kim Young-jae of the same department, has been accepted for publication at the ACM ASIA Conference on Computer and Communications Security (ACM ASIACCS).

The research proposes DiskShield, a new Intel SGX-based storage system that guarantees file integrity in environments where operating system security has been compromised by ransomware. DiskShield consists of a two-way authentication module at the Linux kernel level and a device-level file system inside the storage, and successfully protects data from a variety of data tampering attacks. DiskShield also provides higher security than Intel's Protected File System (IPFS) at the same level of performance.

The research is the final fruit of work Ahn Jin-woo began as an undergraduate research intern in Professor Kim Young-jae's laboratory in his fourth year. The development of the two-way authentication module inside the Linux kernel proposed in this research in particular was carried out jointly with Professor Park Sung-yong and Park Dong-gyu (now a researcher at TmaxSoft; supervisor: Professor Park Sung-yong) of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering and Professor Lee Joong-hee of Korea University's Department of Cyber Security.

ACM ASIACCS is a distinguished international conference on computer and network security, covering embedded systems, hardware and network security. With an acceptance rate of around 21%, ASIACCS is a highly competitive international conference and is listed in the KIISE 'Outstanding Software Conferences 2018' and the 'List of Outstanding International Conferences in CS under the BK21 Plus Programme (IF=1)'.

The conference will be held in Taipei, Taiwan, from 5 to 9 October this year. Owing to COVID-19, it will be held online this year.

Ahn Jin-woo (first author) is due to complete his master's degree in August 2020 and will join Samsung Research after graduating.
