IEEE MASCOTS (an outstanding international conference in CS under the BK21 Plus programme) (First author: Kim Jun-hyung; corresponding author: Professor Park Sung-yong)
The research extends NOVA, a state-of-the-art non-volatile memory file system, by applying a per-CPU log technique in manycore CPU environments with NUMA (Non-Uniform Memory Access) architecture, raising single shared-file write performance by up to eight times over the existing NOVA file system.
Figure 1 illustrates the NOVA file system architecture based on the per-CPU log technique. Figure 2 shows the performance evaluation results for that architecture. S1 and S2 are vanilla NOVA, while S3 is the NUMA-aware NOVA with the per-CPU log technique proposed in this research. As the figure shows, vanilla NOVA achieved I/O throughput of up to about 2 GB/s, whereas S3 achieved up to 16 GB/s.

The research is part of ETRI's (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) 'Foundational Research on High-Performance Manycore-Based Operating Systems' project, in which research teams from Georgia Tech (USA), Virginia Tech (USA), Seoul National University, Yonsei University and Sungkyunkwan University are taking part; at Sogang University, the research teams of Professor Park Sung-yong (Distributed Cloud Laboratory) and Professor Kim Young-jae (AI System Software Laboratory) of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering are participating. The project researches next-generation operating systems whose performance increases with the number of CPU cores; research is currently being carried out in a manycore environment with 120 cores, and scalability research on a 192-core manycore server is planned.
The IEEE MASCOTS conference is a distinguished international conference for the latest research on the measurement, modelling, simulation and analysis of computer and communication systems. This year MASCOTS had an acceptance rate of 27%. The conference will be held in Nice, France, from 17 to 19 November this year. Owing to COVID-19, it will be held online this year.
