Welcome to the College of Computing at Sogang University.

Software and artificial intelligence are driving innovation across industry and opening new directions in scholarship, reshaping how we learn, how we work, and how we live. In such a time, a university must examine the foundations of technology, uncover new possibilities, and connect those possibilities to the advancement of society and of humanity itself. Our College exists to answer that calling — by educating people who bring together genuine depth of expertise, creative thinking, and a commitment to acting responsibly.

Established in July 2024, the College rests on a tradition of teaching and research built over many years. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, which began in 1981 as the Department of Computer Science, has grown for more than four decades alongside the development of information technology in Korea, and its graduates have gone on to distinguished work in universities and research institutes at home and abroad, in global corporations, and throughout industry. To that foundation we have added the ambitious inquiry of the Department of Artificial Intelligence and the open, flexible curriculum of the Division of AI-based Interdisciplinary Studies, becoming a college in which specialized depth and interdisciplinary breadth grow together.

As the possibilities of artificial intelligence continue to expand, so does the importance of understanding the computing principles that make them possible. A firm command of algorithms and software, of data and networks, of computer systems and hardware, is the ground on which new technology is built. Through teaching and research that span the full breadth of computing, we will educate students who grasp how technology works at its root, who recognize which problems matter, and who can shape the solutions of the future for themselves.

At the center of our educational mission is the growth of each individual student. On a solid foundation in the fundamentals, students build experience through projects and design work, take up problems drawn from research and from industry, and develop the ability to turn their own ideas into something real. Through wide-ranging engagement with the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences, they broaden the perspective they bring to a problem and learn to connect knowledge across disciplines to create new value. Drawing on the strength of Sogang's tradition of small classes and close mentorship, faculty and students work in close conversation, and we support each student attentively so that individual talents and interests can mature into an expertise that is genuinely their own.

In research, we will deepen our scholarship and open new territory. We will take up original questions in the core areas of computer science and artificial intelligence, and work to ensure that the findings of fundamental research carry through into new systems and services and into innovation across industry. We will expand collaboration with universities, research institutes, and companies in Korea and abroad, share what we learn with researchers around the world, and apply the solutions we discover together to real problems in society. We will also widen the opportunities for students to take part in this work and to develop both a researcher's judgment and the ability to act on it.

Sogang University's designation as an AI University by the Ministry of Science and ICT in 2026 marks an important step toward making this vision concrete. Building on it, we will further develop our AI and software curricula and expand interdisciplinary education across majors, industry-linked projects, internships, and opportunities for entrepreneurship. By connecting every stage of learning — from a grasp of first principles through design and implementation to application in the field — we will prepare our students to put their abilities to work on a global stage.

At the center of all our teaching and research stand people. Guided by the Jesuit educational ideals Sogang has carried forward since its founding, we will cultivate academic excellence together with respect for the human person and a sense of responsibility to the wider community. We will educate people who think seriously about the effect technology has on human lives and who apply their knowledge and ability where the world has need of it. Excellence in ability, joined with warmth of character and a sense of responsibility: this is the value at the heart of a Sogang education, and it is the one we intend to keep.

We will build a college where a student's question becomes the starting point for new research, and where a researcher's discovery leads to progress in industry and in society. Drawing together the wisdom and energy of our faculty and students, our staff and alumni, and everyone who joins us in this work, we will open the way to the future of software and artificial intelligence.
