Interdepartmental Major

About · Interdepartmental Major

Across the boundaries between majors,
connected by software and artificial intelligence

Sogang University introduced interdisciplinary majors in 1999, the first university in Korea to do so. An interdisciplinary major weaves two or more fields into a single new curriculum: students keep their primary major and take the interdisciplinary programme as a second or third major.

The College of Software Convergence runs interdisciplinary majors in Convergence Software and in Big Data Science, educating people who use artificial intelligence and software to redefine and solve problems in the humanities, the social sciences, business, the natural sciences and engineering.

Convergence Software

Software development is built systematically on top of a student’s primary major, so that a business student can read a market through data, a humanities student can work with text as code, and a science student can analyse experimental data unaided.

The core computer science curriculum — from introductory programming through data structures, algorithms, operating systems and databases — has been redesigned for students without a software background, and a capstone design course turns what they have learned into a solution to a real problem. Students choose one of two tracks according to their interests and primary major.

  • TRACK A — Convergence Software

Students develop the ability to combine software creatively with a wide range of non-IT fields, and graduate able to build convergence software.

  • TRACK B — Humanities Content Convergence Software

By bringing the humanities together with computer science, students learn to create new humanistic knowledge on an IT foundation.

Big Data Science

Data is the language shared today by every discipline and every industry. Data courses from departments across the university — computer science, mathematics, economics, business, sociology, the humanities — come together in a single curriculum, making this the major in which Sogang’s interdisciplinary strength is most clearly visible.

Students learn both to handle data and to read it, acquiring the ability to process and analyse IT-based big data and to bring efficient solutions to the decisions that follow.

  • Data Engineer track

A curriculum for building the software and systems that create, store and manipulate data.

  • Data Analysis track

A curriculum for developing analysis and prediction skills across application domains.
